Porsche Prototype Era
1964-1973 in photographs
By: Bill Oursler
In a highly focused ten-year period Porsche sports cars went from being regular but comparatively humble class winners to completely dominate international prototype racing. This was a time of non-stop development mixed with turmoil and success under the direction of Dr. Ferdinand Piech, widely considered one of the great automotive geniuses of the modern era. Starting with the fiberglass-bodied 904, which proved nearly unbeatable during 1964 and 1965, this volume provides a vivid photographic history of Porsche's relentless quest for victory, including Le Mans in 1970 917 coupe, and then beyond to the 1,500 HP 917 Can-Am spyder of Mark Donohue, which utterly crushed its opposition in 1973.
